The first two characteristics meet your specifications, and it's within your price range.

It has goto and portability with a decent aperture size. Patrick's suggestion of the Celestron - C6-SGT XLT - 6" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain on CG-5GT Computerized Mount is where my thinking is leading me. It can also be broken down into components for transporting in a car.

While strictly not a "grab and go" scope, this scope is very portable and can be carried outside in one piece. In addition, it has the capacity to carry a wide range of other scopes, larger or smaller. The CG5-GT mount is fully goto and is ideal for the 6" SCT scope.

This scope is similiar in design to the ETX series of scopes except that it has 6" of aperture rather than 105mm and it sits on an equatorial mount rather than a fork mount. In that vein, you might want to consider theĬelestron C6-SGT XLT. 6" of aperture is also getting into the range of being able to get decent views of the brighter deepsky objects.īut tracking and goto can be desireable things also, especially for someone new to the hobby. This could be a good choice if you don't care about tracking. Others have suggested Dobsonian reflectors such as the 6" XTi with object locator. It all kind of centers around your wants and expectations. Having said that, I'm sure there are many satisfied owners of the ETX scopes. I'm like you regarding the ETX's.nervous about the reported issues and also aware of it's limitations. We can also give a lot of divergent answers, so please take that into account when reading responses. Welcome to Cloudynights! As you can imagine, with the holiday season approaching, we get a lot of people asking questions similiar to yours. My son loves the moon and viewing planets, I prefer a mix of planets and stars/galaxies. I've looked hard at the Meade ETX 105PE with coatings but have been scared by the reported issues with them. The scope is a father and son xmas gift and I'd consequently the ease of use in a "goto" scope is ideal. I'm looking for the best bang for my buck in a grab and go telescope around $1000.
